Instead of supporting the workers, the town's black middle class effectively sided with the white owning class, leaving the workers out to dry. The following study of the British Working-class Movement purports to be no more than an introductory survey of a field which needs much further research. There exist already full histories of the Trade Union Movement, by Mr. and Mrs. Webb, and of the Co-operative Movement, by G. J. Holyoake and by Benjamin Jones, as well as many excellent. Socialism has its origins as an independent movement, separate and from without of the working class movement, just as the Working Class Movement has had its separate development. The workers, in the past, themselves have only really been able to achieve Trade Union consciousness on their own as a class though it tends towards Socialism.
